Hypnosis Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a random listing of questions I often get and frequently answer in providing hypnosis. If I didn't answer your question, let me know and I'll add it and answer it below:

1) What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a state of feeling totally relaxed and comfortable. It's different for everyone as relaxation means different things to different people. I have had people report they feel as though they'd just woken up for a great nap, while others report they feel as though they were floating or being brought back from an incredible state of calm. If you don't know what it's like to really be able to relax - hypnosis may be a great tool for you to try or even learn to do on your own.

2) Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

Nope - not a chance. When people are being hypnotized - they only do what they want to do. If they don't want to relax and follow instructions, believe me - they don't. They're in complete control - not me. If I suggested someone do something they don't wish to do (like quit smoking) they won't do it. Similarly - if someone is in a state of hypnosis, they can bring themselves out at any time simply by opening their eyes, sitting up, etc.

3) Can I bring my friend/mom/husband, etc. into the room with me?

I have a great waiting area in my office with some fun magazines for adults and toys/games for kids. They're welcome to come with you to the appointment, but can hang out in the waiting room during the actual session.

4) How long will I be in hypnosis?

This generally depends on the issue we're working to resolve. My quickest hypnosis session to date has been a nail biting one - which took about 15 minutes. Most hypnosis appointments are one hour with 30-45 minutes being the actual hypnosis.

5) I noticed you're in network with my insurance company. Can I use my insurance to pay for hypnosis?

Some of our local insurance providers allow coverage (minus your co-payment) for the implementation of hypnotherapy into counseling sessions. If someone was seeing me for individual, couples, or family counseling and the hypnosis was worked into the overall treatment - this could very likely be covered by your insurance. I've had many insurance providers allow for hypnosis to be included into counseling for people with anxiety, depression, as well as chronic medical conditions. Check with your plan and with me.

6) Will I leave the session clucking like a chicken or barking like a dog?

Actually, I prefer to have people leave meowing like a cat, but that's just me... Comedy hypnosis has given the therapeutic benefits of what I do a bad rap. It is hilarious to watch - but a far cry from what actually happens. Hypnosis can't make anyone do something they do not want to do. The people who get up on a stage and end up dancing with a broom stick at the end of a performance - they wanted to do that & had a great time in the process!
